Architecture 

 

Renaissance Center

A group of seven interconnected skyscrapers in Downtown Detroit, the Renaissance Center serves as the global headquarters for GM. Free one-hour tours are offered on a daily basis Mon-Fri at 12:00 noon and 2:00 pm. The Renaissance Center also features several restaurants, shops, numerous health, fitness and spa facilities and a movie theater.

Fisher Building

A landmark skyscraper in the United States, located in the heart of the New Center area of Detroit. The building contains the elaborate Fisher Theatre and was designated a National Historic Landmark. It is also the location of the headquarters for the Detroit Public Schools. Pure Detroit offers guided tours. 

 

Guardian Building

A landmark skyscraper in the United States, located in the Financial District of Downtown Detroit. The Guardian is owned by Wayne County and serves as its headquarters. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1989. Pure Detroit offers guided tours!

Museums

 

Detroit Institute of Arts Museum

Considered to house one of the best art collections in the United States, the Institute showcases everything from mummies to modern art and African masks to Monets in its outstanding collection of over 65,000 works. In 2003, the DIA ranked the second largest municipally owned museum in the United States, with an art collection valued at more than one billion dollars. The Detroit Institute of Arts hosts major art exhibitions and also contains the 1,150-seat Detroit Film Theatre.

The Henry Ford 

The Henry Ford is  a  large indoor and outdoor history museum complex and a National Historic Landmark in the Metro Detroit suburb of Dearborn, Michigan, USA. The museum contains many rare exhibits including John F. Kennedy’s presidential limousine, Abraham Lincoln’s chair from Ford’s Theatre, Thomas Edison’s laboratory, the Wright Brothers’ bicycle shop, and the Rosa Parks bus. You can also take the Ford Rouge Factory Tour, a first-hand journey behind the scenes of a modern, working automobile factory

Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History

Founded in 1965 by Detroit obstetrician Dr. Charles Wright, this museum is located in the heart of Midtown Detroit’s Cultural Center. it holds the world’s largest permanent exhibit on African American culture and moved to a new facility on Warren Ave in 1997.

Motown Historical Museum

Once the headquarters of Motown Records and Tamla Records, the Motown Museum tells the story of the classic era of these records from 1959 to 1971, where Hitsville USA had an astounding 110 top 10 hits! The museum houses Motown memorabilia such as album covers, gold records, costumes and photos related to the rich history of Motown and its founder, Berry Gordy.

Performing Arts Venues 

 

Fox Theater

The Fox Theatre is a movie palace and performing arts center built in 1928. Located within the Detroit Theater District, the Fox has become one of the most successful theaters in the country combining Broadway shows, concerts, special events and the special classic film screenings. The Fox has 5,048 seats. It is the largest surviving movie palace of the 1920s and the largest of the original Fox Theatres. The Fox was fully restored in 1988.

Detroit Opera House

The Detroit Opera House is an ornate opera house in the United States, located in Grand Circus Park Historic District. It is the home of the Michigan Opera Theatre and its productions. The 2,700 seat venue also hosts a variety of other events. The historic theatre opened January 22, 1922.

Masonic Temple

The largest Masonic Temple in the world, this ornate 14-story building opened in 1926. For decades its 5,000-seat, acoustically rich and intimate auditorium has served as Detroit’s choicest venue for concerts, opera and plays.

Orchestra Hall

Orchestra Hall is an elaborate concert hall in Midtown. The hall is renowned for its superior acoustic properties and serves as the home of the internationally known Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO), the fourth oldest orchestra in the United States. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971

Detroit RiverWalk

RiverWalk stretches along the water for 2.5 miles of fountains, walkways, and green space starting at the Cobo Hall convention center.

Belle Isle

Belle Isle is an island park in the Detroit River, between the United States mainland and Canada. It is connected to the rest of Detroit  by the MacArthur Bridge. It is the largest island city park in the United States and the third largest island in the Detroit River after Grosse Ile and Fighting Island.

TCF Center

Previously known as the Cobo Center, the TCF Center is a major convention center in downtown Detroit. The Detroit Basketball Championships are held here and so are some of the greatest rock and roll concerts in the world. The center is also home to the annual North American Auto, which was recently moved from a winter event to a summer one as well as Autorama, which it hosts each March.

 

Eastern Market

A six-block public market, first opened in 1804, and moved to it’s current location in 1891. Specialty food stores, farm fresh vegetable and fruit vendors, and many restaurants line Russell Street from Mack to Gratiot. Eastern Market farmer’s distribution center is the largest open-air flowerbed market in the United States and has more than 150 foods and specialty businesses. Dequindre Cut 

An old railroad line turned into a below-grade pathway for running, biking, walking! Much of the Cut has been converted to greenway with colorful graffiti left in place and pop up bars/restaurants during the summer. It runs from Mack Avenue south to Woodbridge Street, between Jefferson Avenue and the Detroit River.[1] The Dequindre Trail connects the Cut between Woodbridge Street and the William G. Milliken State Park and Harbor along the International Riverfront.

Suburbs

  • Dearborn – Detroit’s suburb to the Southwest and home of Ford Motor Company, Dearborn, has a leading attraction, The Henry Ford (the Henry Ford Museum & Greenfield Village) a large historical and entertainment complex, and the Automotive Hall of Fame. Dearborn has the second largest Middle-Eastern population in the World, with mosques being a common sight and a wide selection of Middle-Eastern food and shopping.

 

  • Royal Oak – Home to the beautifully landscaped Detroit Zoo, Royal Oak is a friendly suburb outside of Detroit which boasts a classy night scene with exciting dining and a diverse avant-garde bar culture.

 

  • Troy – Troy, a suburb of Detroit, contains the Somerset Collection, one of the largest upscale malls in the Midwest. Visit Nordstom, Macy’s, Henri Bendel, Ralph Lauren/Polo, Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Tiffany & Co, Barney’s New York, and more than 180 other specialty shops. Follow Big Beaver Road east as it becomes the Metropolitan Parkway toward Metropolitan Beach on beautiful Lake St. Clair.



Getting Out of Town

 

Michigan

Although Detroit itself provides the majority of the region’s visitor attractions, the entire Southeast Michigan area is large and diverse and contains a great wealth of hot spots and attractions that are also well worth visiting.

  • Ann Arbor – Home to the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor offers many attractions of a self-enclosed small city. A thriving downtown, lots of culture, and plenty of students. The city boasts the number one rated Ann Arbor Street Art Fair which attracts over 500,000 attendees from across the nation each July. Enjoy the Beach at Kensington Metropark, or winter skiing at nearby Mt. Holly, and Brighton.
  • Flint – The home of the modern labor union movement in the U.S. While not as tourist- friendly as Ann Arbor, Flint has a great art scene for a city of its size and is much less pretentious.
  • Grand Rapids – Michigan’s second largest city. With a skyline filled with construction cranes, many believe Grand Rapids is Michigan’s future. With a great, clean downtown area and the city’s proximity to Lake Michigan, Grand Rapids is a grand experience waiting to happen.
  • Lake St. Clair and the St. Clair River – Waterfront activities and living are among the luxuries of the metropolitan Detroit area. Experience cruises and boating on beautiful Lake St. Clair. Enjoy the charm of a small town lifestyle in a major metropolitan area in and around Lake St. Clair’s Anchor Bay.
  • Up North”– there are a variety of small cities/towns throughout the state of Michigan that are great for weekend getaways in the summer or winter! Whether you enjoy hiking, camping, or swimming in the fresh water lakes of if you enjoy walking around quaint little towns. Some places in the lower peninsula include: Tawas, Ludington, Bellaire, Torch Lake, Petoskey, Mackinaw City, Elk Rapids, Manistee, Glen Arbor, Leland or Charlevoix! IF you would like to venture a bit further to the beloved and beautiful UP (upper peninsula!) some places include: Mackinac Island, Marquette Copper Harbor, Munising (home of the famous Pictured Rocks), Paradise (home of the Tahquamenon Falls), White Fish point, or St. Ignace 
  • Traverse City: Great for outdoor activities such as hiking, beach time, swimming, biking, etc. Numerous wineries, breweries, and home of the Cherry festival. 
  • Frankenmuth: Bavarian style historic town in MI. Home to Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland, the largest Christmas store in the world. Lots of cute shops and areas to walk around. 

Ohio

  • Toledo, Ohio is about an hour south on the DT Expressway (I-75). This mid-sized city is on the edge of Lake Erie, which offers numerous nearby recreational opportunities. The city is a good destination for restaurant and architecture buffs. Toledo also boasts a nationally known art museum and zoo, and is a regional center for alternative energy research and development.
  • Cedar Point is about an hour east of Toledo, this action packed amusement park is routinely ranked among the best in the world.

 

Ontario

  • Windsor, Ontario, Canada lies just across the Ambassador Bridge or through the Detroit- Windsor Tunnel, which is located right next to the Renaissance Center This heavily trafficked border crossing has shaped Windsor more than anything else; well- maintained, walkable streets with many shops and restaurants. Windsor provides great views of Detroit’s skyline, especially on summer nights from waterfront Dieppe Park. Lots of wineries along the coast too.  Crossing the border requires a passport or a Real-ID Driver’s License.



Sports

Home to four professional American sports teams, Detroit is an important sports center. It is one of twelve cities in the United States to have teams from the four major North American sports.

All but one of the area’s teams compete within the city of Detroit. There are three active major sports venues within the city of Detroit: Comerica Park (home of the baseball team Detroit Tigers), Ford Field (home of the football team Detroit Lions), Little Caesar’s Arena (home of the ice hockey team Detroit Red Wings and NBA team Detroit Pistons).
